Precision Farming in Germany

There are many factors that are currently stimulating growth in the global precision farming market. A growing global population, simproved environmental restrictions and declining agricultural product prices due to an increasingly globalized competition, are all contributing to this particular system becoming more attractive to not only growers, but the entire agricultural sector.
Many suppliers, agricultural machinery producers, seed and crop protection companies as well as IT companies with varying levels of recognition and market share are also entering the precision farming market. This increase in competition has prompted the development of certain requirements for suppliers in order to compete within the market. These include (but are not limited to) possessing a high level of market knowledge, as well as a greater understanding of the needs of the grower. The Kleffmann Group conducted the following precision farming study in October of 2015, aiming to reflect the current opinions and needs of growers working in this particular field. The following four questions were asked of the participants:
- How does the farmer see Precision Farming?
- What chances and hazards does he see?
- What comprehension did the farmer generate regarding certain technologies?
- What does the farmer expect from the agricultural industry?
With a greater level of attention being drawn to their particular field of farming, many growers felt uncomfortable about being in the ‘spotlight,’ and are experiencing increased criticism in regards to their farming practices. The study also found that the authorities’ tightening of environmental restrictions has given technological advances such as precision farming an opportunity to be more widely employed. Some growers saw this system of farming as having the ability to improve the reputation of agriculture as a profession, especially if it was able to prove to the public that governmental and chemical dosage restrictions were being strongly adhered to by growers. With these farming standards becoming public knowledge, the reputation of the farming profession, and of the grower himself, would be expected to improve.
For decades, agriculture has been wrongly perceived as a sector lacking in technological relevance, but it is now expected by growers that the growth of precision farming could bring with it increased interest, and public recognition, subsequently strengthening the motivation of employees. This may lead to competitive advantages for properties that use precision farming, with motivated employees expected to work more efficiently, and even able to entice prospective employees, who may be attracted to work in a more efficient and technologically relevant working environment.
