Pessimism among French farmers

Between November 2015 and April 2016, the agricultural market research company Kleffmann Group asked approximately 600 French farmers how they feel about the current economic situation in the agricultural sector. The results provide a picture of dissatisfaction.

50% of farmers classify the general economic situation as ‘bad’ to ‘very bad’. Only 15 percent of farmers state that the current situation is ‘good’ to ‘very good’. A significant distinction can be found in the farm type. Both livestock and arable farmers assess the current situation as ‘very bad’. Only agricultural companies with a focus on special crops see the situation as less critical (Figure 1).

Generally, those farmers polled rated their own economic situation more positively than the general economic situation in French agriculture (Figure 2). There was still a prevalent negative tendency for livestock farmers, 50% of them assess their own economic situation as ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’, and so do 40% of arable farmers. On the contrary, 40% of arable farmers who focus on special crops assess their economic situation as ‘good’ to ‘very good’ (Figure 3).

The assessment of the economic situation for the next twelve months is unexpectedly positive. 35% of the interviewed farmers foresee that their own economic development will be ‘good’ to ‘very good’. However the general negative situation previously described stays the same in the respective directions e.g. only every fifth livestock farmer has a positive outlook for the future. Regional differences can also be observed. Farmers in the regions of Île-de-France, Lorraine and in the Auvergne are less optimistic than farmers at the Côte d’Azur (Figure 4).

Xavier Beulin, the president of the French farmers’ association (FNSEA), says that the announced and planned assistance of the agricultural sector in mid 2015 works very slowly, which puts more pressure on French farmers; and farmers hope for a rapid implementation and expansion of activities in the future.*
